The City of Helsinki has selected GRK to carry out the renovation of the Makasiinilaituri pier, located in the South Harbour of Helsinki. The value of the project is approximately 16 MEUR. Construction work will begin in August 2025, and the project will be completed in October 2026.
The City of Helsinki and GRK signed the contract for the reconstruction of Makasiinilaituri on July 16, 2025, officially adding the project to GRK’s order backlog.
Construction work will start at the northern part of Makasiinilaituri, located between the Olympia Terminal and Satamatalo, at the beginning of August. The renovation of Makasiinilaituri marks the first phase in the redevelopment of the Makasiiniranta area.
The project involves the reconstruction of the old pier. The construction area is located in the northern section of Makasiinilaituri, covering approximately half of its length. During the renovation, GRK will rebuild the pier structures along a 160-meter stretch in the southern part of Makasiiniranta, maintaining the current shoreline alignment. The existing structures will be dismantled and rebuilt.
“GRK’s project site is in a prime location and part of Helsinki’s culturally historic landscape. This is a diverse and demanding project, but we have experience in building maritime Helsinki, including projects in Verkkosaari, Sompasaari, and Jätkäsaari, where we are currently working on the renovation of the old Jätkäsaari pier. We also have the specialized drilling equipment required for this project, developed specifically for challenging ground conditions and demanding construction sites,” says Jaakko Mäkelä, Business Director at GRK.
